The hospital is public and part of SUS: its rules for doulas state that all care is at no charge to the patient.
Per the HU service charter (2024 file), obstetric-gynecological emergency care works “by referral and/or assigned area”; the maternity serves patients of Florianópolis’ 18 Centros de Saúde. Confirm the procedure with HU.
Per the hospital’s website, it is open around the clock (page updated in November 2020).
Accredited since 1997 as a Baby-Friendly Hospital (Hospital Amigo da Criança), uses the kangaroo method; the CIAM breastfeeding support center operates (HU announcement of July 31, 2026).
A woman may have a companion (Lei 14.737/2023): companions change shifts at 8:00 and 20:00, and the hospital provides their meals.
The CNES registry (the Ministry of Health’s open data in JSON) lists an obstetric center and a neonatal service.
Per NSC Total (April 2025), HU said it will begin a renovation expanding the maternity ward (a federal PAC growth-program project, R$ 16 million). The status of the work in October 2026 is unchecked; confirm the effect on admissions.
No charge to the patient. Prenatal care is usually provided at the local clinic (UBS); how to be admitted to this particular hospital is set by its own procedure.
By law, a woman has the right to a companion of her choice (Lei 14.737/2023) and to ask for a doula to be admitted (Lei SC 16.869/2016). These are two separate rights. How they work in this hospital is covered in the facts and in the doula section.
Per HU-UFSC’s rules of March 28, 2025 (document PS.MA.COMATER.0001/25). The doula signs up in advance for an “open visit” (visita aberta) and registers: form, copy of a photo ID, copy of the course certificate, original certificate of attending the visit, signed Termo de Conduta (commitment to follow the rules). Review: up to 15 working days. In labor, the woman’s written consent and a description of methods are required. The doula does not interfere with doctors, perform medical procedures, or take or publish photos or video of premises, staff or other patients without permission.
If the birth will be at this hospital: I’ll find out its procedure in advance, help prepare the doula’s documents and the birth plan, be beside you and interpret. Decisions about medical care are made by the hospital’s care team.

State public maternity hospital, SUS care at no charge to the patient. Santa Catarina’s first public maternity hospital, about 300 births a month. A doula is admitted under the hospital’s rules.
Hospital Regional de São José Dr. Homero de Miranda Gomes (HRSJ)
