Doula support for birth in Florianópolis

A Russian-speaking doula who interprets at appointments and in the maternity hospital. Preparation, birth and the first weeks: choose what you need.

What doula support is

A doula supports a woman physically, with information and emotionally: before the birth, during it and after. Katerina also interprets at appointments and in the maternity hospital and helps you ask the doctors questions and understand the answers.

Support does not replace a doctor and does not decide for the state. Medical decisions are made by the maternity hospital’s care team, decisions about documents by government authorities. Exactly what your package includes is written into the contract.

Who it’s for

  • You plan to give birth in Florianópolis and don’t speak Portuguese
  • You already live in Floripa and want someone of your own beside you at appointments and in the maternity hospital
  • Your baby has been born and you need support in the first weeks

How support works

  1. Getting acquainted

A 20-minute call, no obligation. You tell Katerina where you are and how far along you are. She answers your questions and suggests which format will fit.

  2. Agreements

The scope of the package, timelines and payment are written into the contract. You can ask questions before signing.

  3. Preparation

Meetings before the birth: birth plan, questions for your doctor, choosing between the public system (SUS) and a private clinic. The number and format of meetings are agreed in advance.

  4. Birth and afterwards

From the agreed week, Katerina is on call and ready to come. At the hospital she is beside you and helps you talk with the doctors. Postpartum meetings are not in every package: see what’s included below.

Package details are current as of October 12, 2026

Price and scope are indications as of the date shown; the contract sets them finally. Government fees and the cost of medical services are not included unless stated otherwise.

SUS or a private clinic

The family chooses: SUS or a private clinic. In SUS the system usually assigns the hospital; in a private clinic the choice is yours. Katerina helps with both.

Public system (SUS)

No charge to the patient. The law gives migrants living in the country access without discrimination by citizenship or migration status; for tourists, the city and facility set the terms. The facility decides on admission (by referral or district, for example); a place can’t be promised in advance.

Private clinic

Paid: the amount is set by the contract with the clinic and the medical team, and it is not part of the support price. A doula’s presence at the woman’s request is established by law, but each clinic has its own procedure. We can discuss a rough figure on the call.

What the law says

Briefly and with caveats: this is general information, not legal advice.

  • A doula gives physical, informational and emotional support during pregnancy and especially in labor (Lei 15.381/2026, art. 2).
  • A doula does not perform medical procedures, give medication or interfere with the doctors’ work (Lei 15.381/2026, art. 4, sole paragraph).
  • In Santa Catarina, public and private maternity hospitals must admit a doula at the woman’s request; the facility sets the admission procedure (Lei SC 16.869/2016, art. 1).
  • The federal law also establishes the presence of a doula in labor at the woman’s request, in public and private facilities (Lei 15.381/2026, art. 6).
  • The presence of a doula does not cancel the woman’s right to a companion of her choice (Lei 15.381/2026, art. 6, § 1; Lei 14.737/2023).

What I don’t take on

Better to know this before the contract, not after.

  • Hiding the purpose of a trip or helping to get around entry rules
  • Promising citizenship, timelines or a particular course of birth
  • Replacing a doctor or midwife: diagnoses, medication and decisions in labor
  • Giving legal opinions: that takes a Brazilian lawyer (advogado)

Questions about support

What people most often ask before the first conversation.

Do I need a doula if a doctor is there? How is she different from a midwife?

Doctors and midwives are responsible for medical care; a doula is responsible for physical, informational and emotional support (Lei 15.381/2026, art. 2 and 4). She suggests how to ease contractions, helps you breathe, stay calm and understand what is happening.

A doula does not perform medical procedures, give medication or interfere in the care team’s technical actions (art. 4, parágrafo único). Katerina also interprets and helps you ask questions. A doctor treats; a doula supports and interprets.

Will a doula be admitted to the maternity hospital, and how is it arranged?

By law, yes: in the state of Santa Catarina, public and private maternity hospitals must admit a doula at the woman’s request (Lei SC 16.869/2016, art. 1); the federal law on the doula profession (Lei 15.381/2026, art. 6) also confirms a doula’s presence in labor in both networks. Admission depends on the documents the facility asks the doula for.

Each facility sets its own admission procedure: usually a letter of introduction, a photo ID, a description of methods and the woman’s written consent are needed; HU-UFSC, for example, requires prior registration of the doula. A doula does not perform medical procedures.

What does Katerina do, and what does her assistant do?

Katerina is responsible for birth preparation, support at the maternity hospital, interpreting and support in the first weeks. Organizational tasks (airport meeting, finding housing, car rental) are included only in the extended package; who exactly does them can be clarified on the first call.

The scope of a package is set out in the contract: compare it with the description of the chosen package and ask your questions before signing.

How does the first conversation go, and does it commit me to anything?

The first conversation takes 20 minutes, with no obligation. Tell Katerina where you are now, how far along you are and what worries you most: she will answer your questions and suggest where to start and which support format might fit.

You can reach her on WhatsApp, by email or through the form on the site. The decision about support and the contract are separate steps after the conversation.

What does the whole thing cost, and what does it include?

There is no single total: birth in SUS is not paid for by the patient (the admission procedure depends on the facility), and in a private clinic the price is set by the contract with the clinic and the medical team. Support, flights, housing, food, government fees (the child’s passport, a residence permit), apostille and translations are paid separately.

Katerina’s support comes in four packages; what is included, what isn’t and who does the work is described on the page “Services and prices”. Amounts with dates and sources are collected on the page “What it costs”, in the table “What the cost is made of”; figures from the media and chats are not used.

What does Katerina not do?

Katerina is not a doctor or a lawyer. The law forbids a doula to perform medical, physiotherapy and nursing procedures, give medication and interfere in the technical actions of medical staff (Lei 15.381/2026, art. 4, parágrafo único; Lei SC 16.869/2016, art. 2); diagnoses and treatment stay with the doctor. She gives no legal opinions, does not make decisions for government authorities and does not promise results: neither citizenship, nor timelines, nor a particular course of birth.

She also does not help hide the purpose of a trip and does not publish families’ stories without their written consent.

Medical information

A doula is not a doctor: she supports, explains and interprets. Doctors make the medical decisions. In an emergency, call SAMU 192 (ambulance).
